Volunteer Positions
Ref Coordinator
Please email Ellery Irvin (elleryi@shaw.ca ) if interested in this position.
The Ref Coordinator role involves ensuring our current referees are properly trained and supported throughout the season. The scheduling of referees for games from early October until season wind up in March is crucial to the operation of the organization. The role also involves dealing with any communications that involve officiating, being the contact for local refs, coaches, players, Zone Reps, Evaluators/Mentors, Cochrane Ringette Board and Alberta Ringette.
Specifically, the job requires occasional website searching and communication with the Zone Referee Coordinator and Alberta Ringette over the summer to be aware of training clinics offered in the fall. In early September, adequate communication must be done to determine who is available as returning referees and to recruit new referees. Training clinics are held in the Zone and in Calgary for both new and experienced refs, thus some phone calls/e-mails are needed to coordinate the registration and attendance for these individuals.
Once schedules are out, simply scheduling referees for games and then communicating schedules to refs, team managers and the Zone Rep are the priorities over the entire season. This can be straightforward and take one hour per week or can be more time consuming if referees must be sought from other communities. Occasionally 2-3 hours per week may be needed.
On going support, training, and evaluation of our local referees occurs through the Zone Rep as mandated by Alberta Ringette. Early in the fall, our referees will be made known to the Zone Rep and it is determined which age and ranking the refs can officiate at. During the first few games, the newer refs will be mentored by experienced refs. Later in the season, actual evaluations for all refs occur to aid in the training and performance of the refs, and to potentially advance the referees in their Age/Ranking status if appropriate. This needs to be coordinated by the Cochrane Ref Coordinator. These types of phone calls/e-mails can take another 1-2 hours per week on an intermittent basis.
This is an interesting and important role and much of the workload can be scheduled at your own convenience. During the season, the duties take between one and occasionally up to four hours per week. It is helpful to attend the Cochrane Ringette Board meeting held monthly.
U12 Zone 2 Coordinator
The Zone 2 Coordinator role involves collecting, recording, ranking and submitting U12 stats for the zone and coordinating playoff games. No Zone 2 meeting attendance is required.
